Mr. Long represents high net worth individuals on estate planning, gift tax, and income tax matters. He regularly works with clients to develop and implement tax efficient estate plans that are tailored to a clients’ wealth preservation, wealth transfer, charitable, and business succession planning goals.
Mr. Long is experienced in drafting various estate planning instruments, including wills, financial and medical powers of attorney, grantor/non-grantor trusts, revocable/irrevocable trusts, asset protection trusts, and special needs trusts and related instruments.
Mr. Long advises clients on tax aspects of complex partnership and corporate transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, and due diligence matters. He also advises clients on withholding and reporting obligations related to cross-border activities and investments.
Before joining Bodman, Mr. Long was a Senior Associate for two global accounting firms advising multinational companies on a variety of international tax matters including inbound and outbound tax planning, cross-border transactions, legal entity restructuring, and foreign income tax reporting. He also worked as the Director of Client Services and a Senior Tax Attorney for a tax controversy firm where he prepared corporate and individual tax returns, resolved tax debts with federal and/or state tax authorities, and represented clients in IRS audits.
While in law school, Mr. Long served as Notes and Comments Assistant Editor for the Business Law and Securities Journal. He served as a Judicial Intern to the Hon. Paul D. Borman of the U.S. District Court for Eastern District of Michigan and worked as a Clinician with the MSU College of Law Small Business & Nonprofit Clinic where he advised start-up companies, existing small businesses, and nonprofit organizations on a variety of general business and tax law issues.
He is a member of the Wolverine Bar Association and the National Association of Black Accountants. Mr. Long is also a member of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Michigan. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Walsh College in the Master of Science in Taxation Program. He is a member and Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Ruth Ellis Center.
