Wayne Roberts Receives Thomas M. Hoatlin Award from MICPA

Bodman PLC is pleased to share that Wayne Roberts, co-chair of the firm’s Business Tax Practice Group, was selected as the 2024 Thomas M. Hoatlin Award honoree by the Michigan Association of CPAs (MICPA).
The Thomas M. Hoatlin Award recognizes an MICPA member who most significantly contributes to the lasting and mutually beneficial relationship between the MICPA and the Michigan Department of Treasury. MICPA notes that throughout the 30 years that Roberts has been an active member of MICPA, he has provided “exceptional contributions in strengthening the MICPA and the CPA community’s connection with the Michigan Department of Treasury.”
Roberts, based in Bodman’s Grand Rapids office, is a recognized state and local tax (SALT) lawyer whose broad tax practice includes all aspects of federal and state tax planning, structuring, and tax litigation, as well as corporate, business and individual tax planning and federal, state and local tax controversies. Roberts is one of Michigan’s most honored tax attorneys. Among other honors, he has been recognized by the Grand Rapids Business Journal as a Notable West Michigan Lawyer and Grand Rapids Magazine as a Top Lawyer in Tax Law. The Best Lawyers in America, named Roberts the Grand Rapids “Lawyer of the Year” for Litigation and Controversy-Tax in 2025, 2022 and 2017 and the Grand Rapids “Lawyer of the Year” for Tax Law in 2023, 2021, 2017 and 2014.
In 2022, Roberts was elected as a Fellow of The American College of Tax Counsel by the College’s Board of Regents. Roberts is one of only approximately 700 ACTC Fellows nationwide is the only current Fellow who practices in the Grand Rapids area.
The Thomas M. Hoatlin Award will be presented to Roberts at the MICPA’s Celebrate Awards on November 13 at the Gem Theatre in Detroit.
