Charles M. Russman Receives Certifications from International Association of Privacy Professionals

By: Bodman PLC

11/01/17

Bodman PLC is pleased to announce that Charles M. Russman, chair of the firm’s Data Privacy and Security Practice Group, has earned his Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).

The IAPP provides a wealth of resources for professionals in a variety of industries to enhance their knowledge of privacy law and help their clients or workplaces protect data. Russman already holds a CIPP/US certification, which is the global gold standard certification for privacy professionals, reflecting a thorough understanding of U.S. privacy laws and regulations.

The CIPP/E certification designates European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other European data protection law knowledge, perspective, and understanding that will ensure organizational compliance. Earning the CIPM certification signifies that individuals know privacy regulations, and they know everything needed to establish, maintain, and manage an enterprise-wide privacy program across its entire lifecycle. These certifications combined provide privacy professionals with the knowledge required to hold the role of data protection officer (DPO), as defined within the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) put forth by the European Union, which takes effect May 2018. The IAPP estimates that it will take approximately 75,000 DPOs to meet GDPR requirements.

In his legal practice, Russman helps clients address privacy and security concerns including establishing and clarifying record retention policies, training employees about privacy and security policies to protect customer data, and addressing privacy breaches such as hacking or loss of customer data. As chair of the Data Privacy and Security Practice Group, he oversees a talented team of attorneys helping clients of every industry sector and size to defend their data.

For those interested in learning more about GDPR, Russman will host an informative session titled “What is GDPR? The New Privacy,” on December 7 from 8:00 to 9:00 AM at Bodman’s Detroit office at Ford Field. Advance registration is required. For more information, please contact BodmanEvents@bodmanlaw.com.
