Zhang is an honors graduate of Wayne State University Law School, where she served as membership chair of the Michigan Asian Pacific American Bar Association and as a vice president of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association. She served judicial internships with Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen and with Judge Gershwin A. Drain of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She also worked as a student attorney with the Wayne Law Business and Community Law Clinic, advising small business clients on a variety of contract, corporate, tax, and intellectual property matters.

Prior to attending law school in the United States, Zhang earned her undergraduate degree in China. She is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese.
