Overview

Ms. Brownfield is a member of the High Net Worth Practice Group. She advises individual clients in the areas of estate, financial, and charitable planning, including creating customized and comprehensive estate plans that accomplish the clients’ objectives, reflect their values, and preserve their assets.

After the clients’ goals are identified and decisions are made, she develops the legal structures, such as revocable grantor trusts, special needs trusts, and irrevocable trusts, to implement the plan and manage the client’s wealth over time.

She assists clients in the administration of estates and trusts, coordinating the efforts of agents, accountants, and financial professionals.  Ms. Brownfield also assists the trustee or executor in carrying out various fiduciary functions, such as collecting, valuing and disposing of assets, accounting for the administration of the trust and estate assets, and ensuring that the intentions of the grantors are preserved and the beneficiaries are protected.

As part of her diversified trusts and estates practice, Ms. Brownfield frequently advises owners of family businesses on succession planning including transferring management responsibilities and control to the next generation on the owner’s incapacity, retirement or passing. She also counsels closely-held businesses in preparing shareholder and operating agreements, buy/sell agreements, and related transactions. She advises individuals and businesses on real estate matters, including purchases, sales, and financing, and family cottage planning.

Before joining Bodman, Ms. Brownfield was a senior attorney and trusts and estates practice leader at a large Detroit-area firm. She also has experience as an educator, holding the position of clinical assistant professor of law at The University of Michigan Law School.

She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the Financial and Estate Planning Council of Metropolitan Detroit. An active community member, she serves on the Karmanos Cancer Institute Advisory Committee and as a trustee of the Judson Center Foundation.
